All the Features Microsoft Removed in Windows 11

Microsoft just announced Windows 11 at their event today, and we’ve seen all the major features coming to the desktop operating system. But what about the features that Microsoft has removed with Windows 11? If you are skeptical about installing Windows 11 and are considering whether the upgrade is worth it, here is a list of features that Microsoft deprecated or removed with Windows 11.

List of features removed in Windows 11

While Microsoft has removed some features from Windows 10, today it has brought in better features to replace them in Windows 11. For what it’s worth, here are all the features that Microsoft removed during its transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Live tiles

With the rejuvenation of the Start menu in Windows 11, Microsoft has left Live Tiles behind forever. You will no longer see those dynamic previews on the Start menu that rarely worked as expected. With that said, if you want to go back to Live Tiles in Windows 11, you can follow our guide to get back to the Windows 10 Start menu in Windows 11.

Windows timeline

One change users are sure to notice when moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is the removal of Timeline. The timeline was a sophisticated task view to show a chronological view of the applications that you have accessed on your Windows PCs. However, Microsoft claims that some Timeline features will be retained through Edge.

Cortana

Microsoft has verified that Cortana will no longer be included in this first boot experience. What does that mean? Well, you no longer have to listen to Cortana yelling at you saying, “Hi! I am Cortana also I am here to help. A little login here, a touch of Wi-Fi there, and we’ll have your PC ready for whatever you plan to do ”when you set up your new Windows 11 PC. Thanks, Microsoft.

Another change appearing to Cortana is that it will no longer be pinned to the taskbar by default. If that’s not enough, you can uninstall Cortana from Windows.

Tablet mode

Microsoft is removing Tablet mode in Windows 11. However, you shouldn’t worry about that. The company has vastly improved the touchscreen experience with its new Windows 11 desktop operating system. Additionally, Windows 11 will automatically adjust itself every time you connect a keyboard to your tablet.

Quick status on the lock screen

Windows 10, you can choose apps to view their quick status right on this lock screen. Microsoft is deprecating this feature with Windows 11 and you will no longer see them on the lock screen.

internet browser

At this point, I am tired of writing about how Internet Explorer is dead. With Windows 11, Microsoft is producing us all a service by disabling Internet Explorer. If you want Internet Explorer, you can use IE mode in Edge to explore legacy sites.

Other miscellaneous features that Microsoft removed with Windows 11 include the following:

  • Math input panel
  • Snip & Sketch replacement for snip tool
  • removal of the People section on the taskbar and Wallet.
  • While Microsoft will no longer include the 3D Viewer, OneNote, Paint 3D, and Skype apps with Windows 11, you can always download them from the Store.
  • You cannot move the taskbar; the only location allowed is flush with the bottom of the screen. Oh, and if you’re using Mode S, it’s now only available on Windows 11 Home Edition.

Features removed by Microsoft in Windows 11
