Lenovo's New Switch-Like Console

With CES 2021 just around the corner, major tech companies are gearing up to showcase their latest and greatest creations. One such company is Lenovo, which is not at all familiar with out-of-the-box computers. Earlier this week, Lenovo’s Japanese sub-brand NEC unveiled what seems like a hybrid of a Switch console also a netbook-style laptop.

Dubbed the “LaVie Mini”, this hybrid device is, as of now, just a concept that Lenovo and NEC are working on. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this will reach consumers. However, it’s always good to see tech giants experimenting with products like this, just like we saw with the world’s smallest gaming laptop.

Looks like a compact laptop

Now coming to the LaVie Mini, looking at the images provided by Lenovo, it looks like a compact laptop at first glance. However, with the right accessories, the device is capable of functioning as a handheld game console or full PC to help play 4K / 60fps on your external TV or monitor.

The actual device features an 8-inch touchscreen, an 11th Gen Intel Core-i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage. There are also several ports for connecting various external devices, an optical touch sensor as a replacement for the trackpad, and white circular keys.

But wait … it’s also a console

Now if you like the idea of a Switch-style handheld game console that runs all the games in your Steam library, you can turn the LaVie Mini into a similar device with a couple of additional wireless controllers. These external controllers plug into the sides of the device and are similar to the Xbox Gamepad in terms of button layout and layout.

However, if you’re a stay-at-home gamer, there’s an additional LaVie Mini dock that comes with additional USB ports and an HDMI-out port. Therefore, users can connect the Mini to the dock and connect an external display to enjoy their games at 4K 60FPS.

Lenovo Lavie mini concept handheld game console Now looking at the device on paper it surely excites the tech enthusiast in me and I would like to try the device once. However, as it is a prototype device, it will likely never make it to the consumer market. Nonetheless, LaVie Mini proves that there is the idea of a hybrid laptop with a game console and that they could one day become all the rage in the market.
