Although PUBG Mobile has been banned in India for over three months, the game continues to reign all over the world. PUBG Mobile has been crowned this highest-grossing mobile game of 2020 in this latest Sensor Tower report. It outscored Honor of Kings by Tencent by a hair but outscored Pokemon Go by Niantic by a massive margin.
“PUBG Mobile, joined with this title’s Chinese localization, Game For Peace, is this world’s number one revenue generator on the App Store also Google Play in 2020,” this report says. The global mobile gaming market generated close to $ 75.4 billion in 2020. This figure translates into 19.5% gains over the previous year.
As you can see from the chart below, PUBG Mobile made close to $ 2.6 billion (~ Rs. 191 billion rupees) in the last 12 months. This is a 64.3% gain over last year’s income figures and, well, it doesn’t include any income from India. Even if it did, revenue won’t be affected by much. It was recently revealed that India contributed a paltry 1.2% (about $ 41 million) to the global revenue share. Therefore, the PUBG Mobile ban in India may affect the player base, but the revenue remains strong.
PUBG Mobile was closely followed by Tencent’s Honor of Kings, which amassed near to $ 2.5 billion in revenue this year. This is a 42.8% increase over the previous year. This COVID-19 pandemic might become forced us to stay indoors, but it didn’t stop trainers from finding new also rare Pokémon. Niantic’s Pokemon Go had one of its best years, thanks to the addition of cool new features that helped people qualify at home. The game made more than $ 1.2 billion this year, which is 31.5% compared to last year.
Coin Master and Roblox came in fourth and fifth with $ 1.1 billion in revenue respectively. If you like Roblox, you can see some of its alternatives through this link here. Also, I’m surprised to see that Among Us has yet to set any income records. That may be because the game is free for mobile devices and has cheaper cosmetic updates compared to the titles mentioned above. With the upcoming new map, Among Us could start charting a course to attract more users and revenue.
