States Must be Prepared to Monitor Vaccine Side Effects

The Center has asked the states to put in place a mechanism to monitor the vicious cycle (AEFI) after the Covid-19 vaccination. Dr. Manohar Agnani, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Health, has written a letter in this regard and said that any state or district should get the vaccine’s side effects. The government has started preparations for vaccination of priority groups before the vaccine arrives. He said that AEFIs should be formed with state physicians, especially brain, heart, breathing and pediatricians. These vaccines will be given to adult patients of Covid-19 suffering from more than one disease like heart disease, stroke, etc. Experts will be able to identify closely if the vaccine has side effects on them.

Further, each state should also create one AEFI Technical Coordination Center in any of its medical colleges, which will help in finding out the cause of side effects and providing medical help. The letter states that when vaccination will be in large numbers, more cases of side effects can also be registered, they need to be followed up by experts.

Ask for funds if you want

The Center has asked UP, MP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha to ask for funds if needed to form a committee of AEFI experts. At the same time, instructions have been given that all district immunization officers should make a list of government, private and other medical institutions present in them. 300 medical colleges and major hospitals in the country have become centers for monitoring the reaction of the drug, also enter the information about the cases of AEFI.
