As the folding phone trend continues to gain momentum, popular phone makers are trying to outdo themselves in this new category. In 2020, we saw numerous folding devices hit the market, and it looks like 2021 will be no different. Rumor suggests that Samsung could launch three new foldable in 2021. And now, a display analyst suggests that Xiaomi will not lag behind the Korean giant.
Seasoned display analyst Ross Young shared a tweet (attached below) on December 24 stating that Xiaomi will launch three new foldable devices in 2021, and all three will have different types of folds.
Following his tweet, Dutch media LetsGoDigital now reported that they have found several Xiaomi folding device patents in the recent past, some of which are expected to be released this year.
Is 2021 going to be the year of Xiaomi folding?
In the more recent patents, there are designs for three clamshell design folding devices and four inward folding screen folding devices. Each of these comes with a different type of camera setup on the back.
So if we follow Young’s statement in his tweet, Xiaomi will launch three new foldable devices in 2021. One will feature a clamshell design like the Galaxy Z Flip or this Moto Razr. Another will feature an inward-folding screen similar to the Galaxy Fold and Z Fold 2. The third will feature an outward-folding screen like the Huawei Mate Xs. All variety, right?
Now Xiaomi does not produce a line about folding devices for its brand (this Mi Mix Alpha is a concept phone with a wraparound screen). So it makes perfect sense for the China-based company to launch trendsetting devices on the market.
We have seen Xiaomi file a patent for a device with multiple folds earlier this year. Also, according to LetsGoDigital, all the other patents of the Chinese company suggest that this will be the year of Xiaomi folding devices.
